Meet Toni Garczynski, a mother of four young children who receive services from Children’s Bureau’s Bridges for Newborns program in Orange County. Bridges for Newborns takes referrals of new mothers who are identified as having significant needs when their children are born and provides them with in-home parenting education, developmental screenings, case management and support services.
Toni's husband works full time, and given he has varying shifts, she is the primary caregiver for the children. She is originally from Ohio and moving to her new home brought about feelings of isolation, anger and stress. Toni was referred to the Bridges program by the hospital where her youngest son was born and began receiving in-home counseling from Children's Bureau social worker, Ashli, to help deal with her feelings. Toni also learned various techniques and tools to help care for her children. She learned the importance of establishing a sleep schedule for the baby, how to calm him and the value of spending more one-on-one time with him. She also learned how to create a daily routine for her toddler-aged children that involved less television and more playtime such as dancing and listening to music as well as time outside for a walk or trip to the park. Toni says that she wants to be a great mom and that the Bridges program has given her the confidence and support she needs to raise her children successfully.
