Children’s Bureau provides intensive mental health services to 40 young children annually through its Day Treatment Program offered at the Sunrise Center in Lancaster. The children range in age from 3 to 6 years and suffer from severe emotional and behavioral problems. These problems may keep them from doing well at home, in school or with making friends or getting along with others. Because of the severity of their problems, some children may be at risk of going to the hospital or being removed from their homes.

Children are taught new, positive behaviors and skills in a classroom setting four hours a day, five days a week. They take part in a variety of group activities including socialization and skill building, recreational activities, art and music activities and occasional field trips into the community to practice the skills they’ve learned. Parent or caregiver involvement with the treatment is vital to the success of the child. The program also provides individual and family therapy, parenting support and medication support services to help the child and their family heal.

One Family's Triumph
Mariana and Juan Perez are working parents of four young children, one of which was diagnosed with autism. Juan and Mariana were feeling overwhelmed and unsure about the various needs that were arising with their children so Juan took the initiative to search for a place to help them. A local referral center introduced him to Children’s Bureau’s Oakwood Family Resource Center four years ago where he found help (social behavioral therapy) for his autistic son, Diego, and surprisingly other programs and activities for the entire family.
